There's a pair of scissors in my stomach!
On Monday, we talked about a trio of brain surgeries that went terribly wrong because of doctors getting left and right mixed up. As bizarre as that sounds, we've got another story that's even more baffling. A man who went in for a simple surgery went out with a retractor lodged firmly in his chest!
Retractors are like scissors (as you can see in the picture above), except instead of sharp ends they have dulled, wide edges. They're used in surgery to carefully pull objects out of your organs without causing any damage. It's also worth noting that they definitely don't belong inside a human body. Daryoush Mazarei found out the hard way just how long a person can endure with a pair of those stuck inside his body.
After a routine surgery where fluid was being drained from a problematic area of his chest, Mazarei felt that his recovery wasn't going the way it should be. He was in much more pain than the doctors had expected, and he wasn't appearing to be getting better. Frustrated physicians and physical therapists eventually concluded that Mazarei was crazy, and was experiencing phantom pain because he was frail. It was only when they ran a CT scan on his body that they realized the horrible mistake that had been made.
The same doctors that took their time realizing something was wrong made haste to take those retractors out. While they did get them out clean and Mazarei's now on the road to recovery, he suffered needlessly for an entire month and almost died because of their careless mistake and dismissive attitude when he told them something was still wrong. Because of this, he's begun filing against the hospital that botched his surgery so badly.
We'll keep you updated on what happens to Mazarei, and whether or not he's able to get justice. In the meantime, we want to make sure you're all taken care of.
